"Generation facebook" How our world is changing
The "datafication" of our lives covers all aspects of our existence. We maintain our "friendships" through social networks such as facebook or MySpace. We make professional contacts through Xing or LinkedIn – sometimes with people we have never met in person. In the workplace – which today could just as well be a seat in a café in many cases – we communicate by email, text messages or in virtual meetings via Avatar. Social processes, such as for example the Arab Spring, are initiated, speeded up or at the very least influenced by social media accessible on the move. In elections, the candidates feed their voters Twitter messages; in parliament, members can use the Internet while in a debate to sample the opinions of the populace. We leave our data traces everywhere. This makes us transparent and open to manipulation – but at the same time the freely available data, translated to appropriate offers and optimised processes, can improve our lives and make then easier. What does the social data revolution mean for us as citizens, employees and employers, and as private individuals? How is our world changing? What is the experience of the rising generation and what future do they expect – and how should schools, the economy and society react? And what is really changing, and where are we over-estimating the importance of the Internet? In the 2011 Symposium of the Ernst Schmidheiny Foundation, we invite experts to speak and search for answers to these questions in discussion with our speakers.
